Festival Weekends at the Polo Grounds in Indio

Two weekends a year turn farmland into the busiest place in the desert

The Empire Polo Club sits on the east side of Indio, out where the developed valley gives way to date groves and fields. Most of the year it is lawns and polo matches through the cool season. For two weekends each spring it becomes the festival ground, and everything within thirty miles reorganises itself around that.

What people underestimate is the reach. Homes fill across Palm Desert, La Quinta, Indian Wells, Indio and Coachella, not just near the venue, and the effect carries over the pass into Palm Springs and up into the high desert as well. Owners set longer minimum stays and higher rates for those weeks. If you are not going to the festival, that is worth knowing before you pick your dates.

It is also a spring desert weekend, which means heat by mid-afternoon, cold once the sun drops, and wind that arrives without much warning. People who plan for a hot day and not a cold night have a worse time than they need to.

If you are going, book the house before you have the ticket

The tickets and the lodging do not move on the same schedule, and the lodging is the tighter of the two. A house in Indio or La Quinta with enough beds and a pool goes months ahead for these weekends. Waiting until your group has confirmed who is actually coming usually means paying more for something further out.

Staying in Indio puts you closest, and it is generally the most space for the money in the middle of the valley. La Quinta and Palm Desert are the more comfortable base with a longer drive at the end of the night. Whichever you pick, plan the return trip properly. Highway 111 and the freeway both back up, rideshare thins out badly toward the east end late at night, and the surrounding streets get managed and priced for the weekend.

Read the house rules before you book, because they matter more here than in most destinations. Expect a firm occupancy limit that counts daytime visitors as well as overnight guests, posted quiet hours, and an explicit no-events clause. A festival weekend is exactly when those get enforced.

Dates shift year to year. Confirm them on the official festival sites before you book anything around them, and if the festival is not why you are coming, the weeks on either side are calmer and noticeably cheaper.
