Each of these filters real Orange County inventory on a verified amenity, so what you see is what the home actually has.
Pick your base by what you want to walk to. Newport Beach puts you on the harbor and the Balboa Peninsula. Laguna Beach means coves, stairways down to the sand, and galleries. San Clemente is the surf town, quieter and further south. Anaheim and Garden Grove sit closest to the theme parks and the convention center.
The county is compact by California standards. The coast runs from Seal Beach down to San Clemente, and Pacific Coast Highway threads the whole length of it, which is the scenic way between towns. The 405 and the 5 are the fast way, right up until they aren't. Freeway traffic here is real, and it will shape your day whether you plan around it or not, so aim your driving at mid-morning or late evening rather than the afternoon crush.
The other honest caveat is the marine layer. Late May and June often start grey and cool at the beach, with the sun burning through by early afternoon, if it burns through at all. Locals call it June Gloom. It is not a reason to skip the trip, but it is a reason to pack a layer and to have an inland plan for slow mornings.
OutdoorsLaguna's shoreline is a chain of small coves separated by rock headlands, most of them reached by public stairways dropping down from Pacific Coast Highway. Tide pools open up along the rocky edges at low tide. Bring water shoes, and check the tide chart first so you are not scrambling back up a shrinking beach.
FamilyNewport's Balboa Peninsula holds the Fun Zone, the ferry across the harbor, and the Wedge at its tip, where bodysurfers ride a famously heavy shorebreak. Balboa Island is a short ride across on the auto ferry: a loop of small cottages, a walkable seawall path, and frozen bananas.
FamilyAnaheim is the theme-park hub, with the Disneyland Resort at its center and Knott's Berry Farm a short hop away in Buena Park. Staying in a home nearby buys you a kitchen, laundry, and room to spread out between park days, which matters more than you expect by day three.
OutdoorsHuntington Beach calls itself Surf City and backs it up with a long pier and a consistent beach break. Farther south, San Clemente and San Onofre draw a mellower, longboard-leaning crowd. Beginners do best on the softer sandbars, so ask a local shop which stretch is working before paddling out.
CultureLaguna Beach grew up as an artists' colony and still shows it. Galleries line Coast Highway and Forest Avenue downtown, and the summer arts festivals on Laguna Canyon Road are the town's signature event. Outside festival season, an afternoon walking the downtown blocks is the easiest culture stop in the county.
OutdoorsNewport Harbor and Dana Point Harbor both rent kayaks, paddleboards, and small electric boats by the hour, and both run whale watching trips year round. Gray whales pass through in winter and spring; blue whales are a summer possibility. Mornings bring the calmest water, before the afternoon wind comes up.
DiningWestminster and Garden Grove hold Little Saigon, the heart of Orange County's Vietnamese community. Bolsa Avenue is the spine: pho counters, banh mi bakeries, com tam plates, and cafes pouring iced coffee thick with condensed milk. Go hungry, go with a group, and order more than you think you need.
DiningSanta Ana's Calle Cuatro is the county's best walkable eating district. Mexican bakeries, taquerias, and juice counters that have fed the neighborhood for decades now sit alongside newer coffee bars and a food hall. Park once in a structure rather than circling the blocks for a street spot.
DiningAround Newport Harbor the theme is seafood with a view: dockside fish houses, oyster counters, and chowder within sight of the boats. Lido Marina Village leans newer and more polished. Expect a wait on summer weekends, and reserve ahead if your group runs bigger than four.
DiningThe traffic circle at the center of Old Towne Orange is ringed by antique shops and old-fashioned counters, including a soda fountain that predates most of the county's freeways. It is the most old-California block in Orange County, and a good breakfast stop on the way inland.
DiningCoastal dining down here splits cleanly: cliffside patios with a sunset view and a matching bill, or the taco shops and breakfast-burrito windows a block inland where the surfers eat. Both are worth doing. View tables fill early on clear evenings, so eat late or eat inland.
DiningBrookhurst Street in Anaheim is Little Arabia, a designated district of Lebanese, Syrian, Egyptian, and Palestinian kitchens, bakeries, and cafes. Shawarma, mezze, and fresh pita come out fast and inexpensive. It is a short detour from the theme parks and a far better dinner than anything inside the gates.

September and October are the best bet. The marine layer has cleared, the ocean is at its warmest after a summer of heating, and the crowds thin once school starts. Spring is lovely too, though the water is still cold and May often turns grey along the coast.
Four to five days is comfortable. That gives you two unhurried beach days, one theme park day, and a day for the inland food neighborhoods without driving in circles. If the parks are the main reason you came, add a day, because two park days plus a recovery day at the beach is the pattern most families settle into.
For most trips, yes. The beach towns, the theme parks, and the inland food neighborhoods are spread out, and transit between them is limited. The exception is a stay on Balboa Island or in downtown Laguna, where you can park the car and walk for days. Budget for beach parking, which is paid nearly everywhere in summer.

June Gloom is the coastal marine layer that settles over the beach towns in late spring and early summer. Mornings come up grey and cool, and some days it never fully burns off. It will not ruin a trip, but it does mean packing a sweatshirt for June evenings and keeping a museum or a food neighborhood in your back pocket.
