Idyllwild's retail is a couple of walkable blocks, and that is the complete inventory. Books, art, outdoor gear, candles and soap, and the kind of thing you buy because you are somewhere else for a few days. You can see all of it in an afternoon without hurrying, and there is no second district hiding somewhere that you are missing.
The constraint works in the town's favour. Nothing here is a chain, the owner is usually the person working the counter, and browsing turns into a conversation faster than it does anywhere with a parking structure. Ask where to hike, where to eat, what the road up to Humber Park is doing. You will get a better answer than any search will give you, and it will be current.
The town also elects an honorary canine mayor, a golden retriever who makes public appearances around the village. It is played entirely straight, which is the best part of it. If that tells you the register of the place, you have read it correctly.
Bring the dog. Idyllwild is dog-friendly in the way that gets claimed far more often than it is true. Water bowls outside doors, leashed dogs on the sidewalks, shops that do not flinch when one walks in. Keep the leash on anyway. There is wildlife in the trees directly behind every one of these buildings, and a bolting dog on this mountain is a bad afternoon.
Two practical notes. Cell service in the village is patchy and card readers depend on it, so a bit of cash in your pocket saves an awkward five minutes at the register. And hours are the recurring Idyllwild problem. Shops keep their own schedules, several close earlier than you would expect, and midweek in the off season a block can be mostly dark by late afternoon. If there is one specific place you want to get to, go there first rather than saving it for last.
Weekend afternoons are the busy version, when the valley empties up the hill and parking on the blocks disappears. Weekday mornings you will have the place close to yourself, and everything that opens at all will be open. That is the better trip, if you can arrange it.
