The eating in Crestline is spread along Lake Drive and the streets near Lake Gregory rather than gathered into one block. Diners, a bakery or two, taco spots, and pizza built for a group that has spent the afternoon in the water and wants food in front of them quickly. It is not a dining scene and it does not try to be one.
What it has over the lakefront is price and parking. Meals here tend to run friendlier than at Lake Arrowhead Village, and finding somewhere to leave the car is far less of a fight, especially once the day crowd starts down the hill in the late afternoon. For a family that is going to eat out four nights in a week, that gap adds up.
The town also works differently from the rest of the ridge because Lake Gregory is public. Crestline gets day visitors who came to swim, so the middle of a summer Saturday is busy in a way that has nothing to do with the restaurants. By dinner most of that has drained back down Highway 138 and the town settles.
From the Lake Arrowhead side, Crestline is a short drive west along the ridge, and it makes sense as a deliberate outing rather than a convenience stop. Pair it with an afternoon at Lake Gregory and eat before you head back, so you are not making the trip twice. Going over purely for dinner is fine on a clear evening and less appealing in weather.
Check hours before you commit. Off season, several places in Crestline run a short week, and a kitchen that was open when you were here in August may be dark on a Tuesday in November. A phone call before you leave saves the drive. Your local manager will usually know which places are keeping full hours that month.
The honest tradeoff is the drive back. These roads are unlit, they wind, and deer are a real hazard after dark. It is not a difficult drive, but it is a slower one than the mileage suggests, and it is worse in fog or after a freeze. If someone in the group is drinking, sort out who is not before you order, because there is no easy alternative up here.
