Summer Markets and Craft Fairs on the Mountain

There are no institutions up here, and that is the accurate expectation

Culturally, this mountain runs on small galleries, a summer farmers market, craft fairs and community theater rather than museums or concert halls. Two clusters hold nearly all of it: Lake Arrowhead Village down at water level, and the strip in Crestline near Lake Gregory. If you came expecting a scene, you will be disappointed. If you came expecting a small town that does small-town things well in July, you will not be.

The summer market is the useful one for anyone staying in a house. Prices at the mountain supermarkets run higher than down the hill, which is what happens when everything arrives by truck over a grade, and the market is a decent way to pick up produce and a few good things for the deck without another drive.

The craft fairs are the other half. They are community events rather than juried shows, which means the quality varies and the appeal is in wandering rather than in shopping with intent. Give one an hour on the way to something else.

Weekends are when it all happens, and weekends are the crowded part

That is the trade. Businesses here staff for weekends and holidays, so a Saturday in summer is when the Village is fully open and the market and fairs are running. Midweek, and through the shoulder seasons in spring and late fall, kitchens close early and some places shut two or three days a week entirely. If you arrive at eight on a Tuesday night in April expecting a busy main street, you will find a quiet one.

So build the weekend around the morning. Get to the Village early, park once in the large lot before it fills, and do the market and the boardwalk before the day-trip crowd arrives from down the hill. The lot fills on summer and snow weekends, and it is a long way back to a legal roadside space.

Midweek in June, before school lets out across Southern California, is one of the quietest and most pleasant stretches of the year up here. It is also when the least is open. Which of those two you want is the actual decision.

Confirm current market days and fair dates with the organisers before you plan around them, since seasonal schedules shift year to year and some events do not run every summer.
