The Hollywood Bowl is an outdoor amphitheater set into a natural hillside in the Cahuenga Pass, and its season runs through the summer. It is one of the few Los Angeles institutions that is a genuine local habit rather than a visitor attraction: orchestral programs, film scores played live to the picture, jazz nights, pop bookings, and fireworks on the big holiday weekends.
The part visitors underestimate is the picnicking. You may bring your own food, and for many events wine or beer as well, though not for all of them, so check the rules for your particular night. Eating dinner in your box or on the terrace before the music starts is half the reason people go, and arriving early enough to do it turns a concert into a long evening outdoors.
Seats are also more different from one another than a seating chart suggests. The boxes at the front are tables you share with whoever else bought into them. The bench sections up the hill are cheap, far from the stage and, on a clear night, perfectly good. Pick deliberately rather than taking whatever comes up first.
The Bowl sits just off the 101 in a narrow canyon with one main entrance, and everyone arrives inside the same half hour. On-site parking is largely stacked, which means your car is boxed in until the people ahead of you leave. That is the normal experience, not a bad night, and it is why locals mostly do not drive.
The alternatives are better. Park-and-ride buses run from lots around the region on performance nights, and Metro's B Line to Hollywood and Highland connects to a shuttle. Both drop you close and, more to the point, get you out. If you are coming from the South Bay or Malibu, treat the trip as the evening's main piece of logistics and leave much earlier than the distance suggests. Confirm the current parking and shuttle arrangements with the venue, because they change between seasons.
Two more things. The canyon cools sharply after dark in every month of the season, so bring a layer even when the afternoon was hot; this is the single most common mistake. And the season is published well ahead and the popular nights sell out, so look at what is programmed before you fix your dates rather than after.
