For a week in mid-August the Monterey Peninsula hosts the largest concentration of collector-car events anywhere. The Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance on the 18th fairway is the anchor, but it is one day of a week that also holds historic racing at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, several major auctions, and a constant stream of cars parked on the street in Carmel and Monterey that would be behind ropes anywhere else.
The part that surprises people is how much of it is free. The auction previews are open, the cars fill the streets and hotel lawns, and there is a morning run in which concours entrants drive a public route around the Peninsula. You do not need a ticket to see extraordinary machinery that week. You need one for the concours lawn and the race paddock.
You also need to know this is the hardest week of the year here by a distance. Rooms, restaurant tables and parking spaces are all gone. Confirm the current dates with the organisers before you plan anything around this window, in either direction.
There are two sane approaches and no third. If car week is the trip, book lodging as far ahead as you can, and a year is not unusual on the Peninsula. Reserve restaurant tables at the same time. Rates during this week bear no relationship to the rest of August, and minimum stays are standard.
If it is not the trip, look at the dates and move. A week on either side gets you the same coast, the same otters and the same weather at a fraction of the price and none of the traffic. This is the clearest case on this coast of a single event being worth planning around rather than through.
If you are here during it anyway, a few things help. Stay on the Santa Cruz side of the bay, where the effect is much weaker, and drive down for a day. Go early, because the streets are best in the morning before the crowd arrives. Expect Highway 1 and Highway 68 to be slow all week rather than only at commute hours. And ask your local manager what is still open before you settle on dates, because on the Peninsula that week the honest answer is usually very little.
