Coastal dining between Laguna and Dana Point falls into two categories with very little in between. There are cliffside patios with a sunset view over the water and a bill to match, and there are the taco shops and breakfast-burrito windows a block inland where the surfers eat before and after a session.
Both are worth doing, and they are doing different jobs. The view restaurants are for the one evening you want to sit above the Pacific and watch the light go. The inland counters are for the other five days, and they are frequently better food per dollar by a wide margin. A breakfast burrito eaten standing in a parking lot at seven in the morning is a legitimate Orange County experience.
The view places know exactly what they are selling. That is not a criticism. The coastline here is genuinely dramatic, with bluffs dropping straight down to the water, and the setting is most of the product. Calibrate your expectations toward the view rather than the kitchen and you will have a better evening.
View tables fill early on clear evenings. Every table with a horizon in it is spoken for around sunset in every season, and the pressure runs worst from late spring through early fall. There are two ways around it: reserve well ahead for the hour you want, or eat late and take the same room after the rush has cleared.
The inland counters keep a different rhythm. Many open early for the surf crowd and close in the afternoon rather than running through to dinner. If you are planning a burrito at eight in the evening, check first, because several of the best ones have been shut for hours by then.
Distances along this stretch are short but the driving is not always quick. Coast Highway is the only through road for long stretches, and it slows to a crawl through Laguna's downtown in summer, so ten miles can eat forty minutes on a Saturday afternoon. Build that in, or pick something walkable from the house. Your local manager will know what is genuinely in walking distance, which along this coast varies a lot from street to street.
