Santa Ana's Calle Cuatro, the stretch of Fourth Street through downtown, is the rare Orange County district where you can leave the car and cover real ground on foot. Mexican bakeries, taquerias and juice counters that have fed this neighborhood for decades sit alongside newer coffee bars, a food hall and a handful of bars. All of those layers are present at once, which is what makes the walk interesting.
This is not a preserved historic district playing a role for visitors. It is a working downtown for a city of several hundred thousand people. The shops between the restaurants sell quinceanera dresses, phone cases and work boots. The pan dulce counters serve the neighborhood first and visitors second. That is exactly the appeal.
The surrounding blocks hold the county courthouse and civic buildings, which gives the district a weekday rhythm during business hours and a completely different one at night. Both versions are worth seeing, and they do not feel like the same place.
Park in a public structure rather than hunting a street space. Circling the blocks for a meter is the most common visitor mistake here, and it costs more time than the walk from a structure ever will. Once you are out of the car the district is a few blocks and everything is on foot.
Timing matters. Weekday lunch runs busy with courthouse and office traffic, which is a good sign rather than a warning. Later in the week the evenings bring the bar and food-hall crowd and a younger scene. Weekend mornings are slower and the bakeries are at their best then. Some of the older counters keep their own hours and close earlier than you would expect, so have a second option in mind before you drive over.
Santa Ana sits inland and central, which makes it an easy detour off the freeway between the coast and the parks rather than a destination drive. It runs noticeably hotter than the beach towns in summer, because the marine layer does not reach this far in. Plan the walk for morning or evening in August and the whole thing is comfortable.
