Lake Skinner and the valley parks

The lake is a reservoir, and that shapes what you can do there

Lake Skinner sits northeast of the vineyards, out past where the tasting rooms end and the road climbs into dry hills. It is a drinking water reservoir first and a recreation area second, which is the single fact that explains the rules. There is fishing, boating and camping. There is no swimming, and body contact with the water is not allowed. People arrive with towels and are surprised.

What it does give you is open shoreline and quiet. The campgrounds sit above the water, the hills around are bare and gold most of the year, and on a weekday you can have long stretches of bank to yourself. It is also the site the valley uses for its balloon and wine festival, which turns the whole area into an event for that weekend and is worth knowing about either as a reason to go or a reason not to.

The drive out is part of it. You leave the vineyard corridor, the road narrows, and within a few miles the landscape stops looking like wine country and starts looking like ranch country. That transition is quick and it surprises people who assumed the whole valley looked the same.

For an ordinary afternoon, stay closer in

Most days you do not need the lake. Harveston Lake Park sits in town with a small lake, a loop path and grass, and it handles a couple of hours with young children without anyone getting back on the freeway. Ronald Reagan Sports Park is the other in-town option, with fields, courts and open space, and it is where you go when a group needs to run something off.

That freeway point is not incidental. Interstate 15 through Temecula backs up badly on Friday afternoons and Sunday returns, and a park you can reach on surface streets is worth more than a better park half an hour up the road. Plan the day around which side of the freeway you are staying on.

Shade is the limiting factor at all of these in summer. The in-town parks have trees in places and open turf in others, and the lake has very little. From roughly June through September, morning and late afternoon are the usable hours and the middle of the day is not.
